Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting

Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting is Easy if Done With a Plan

Garage door opener troubleshooting can be a tedious task, because there are many different problems that can be causing it to not work. There a few things you can do before calling in a professional garage door company to repair it for you.

The first thing to check is the batteries in your remote. If the batteries have died or are low, replace the batteries with new ones. Low batteries are the most common problem homeowners encounter when the garage door is malfunctioning. If the remote is working and the garage door opener is still not operating the door, check the pathway under the door to see if any items are under it or too close to it. Newer garage door openers, for safety reasons, have sensors to keep them from operating when something is in the way. Federal law now requires these sensors. Check the sensor lights to be sure they are pointing directly at each other. If the sensors become misaligned they will cause the garage door to stop operating.

While garage door opener troubleshooting, check all the pathways on the track to see if anything has fallen into the tracks or if any screws are loose that are blocking the pathway of the rollers. Also check for any dents or bends in the track. If both side tracks are clear and there is nothing under the doorway, check the garage door springs by opening and closing the door manually. If it works properly you know the springs are not the cause.

The next step in garage door opener troubleshooting is to listen carefully to the sound of the motor as you are attempting to open or close the door with the remote or the switch. If you hear any grinding or the sound of metal scraping, this means you most likely have a problem with the motor or gears. If this is the case, it would be wise to call in a professional garage door service technician, because the motor would need to be taken apart. A professional technician can advise you whether the motor needs to be replaced or if it can be repaired.
