Garage Door Springs

Finding Replacement Garage Door Springs

Garage doors need springs to operate.  Typically, there are three kinds of springs used for garage doors:  Torsion, spring lift and extension springs.  Torsion springs are extremely strong and are made to last for at least 7 years with average use. Typically, extension garage door springs and spring lift cables are the ones that need replacing more often. Here is some information on brands of torsion, extension and spring lift cables.

If you are attempting to replace your extension springs yourself, you will need a another person to help.  You will need to lift the garage door fully and use a pair of visegrips to lock below the door roller to keep it from moving down the track while you replace your springs.  Remove the broken springs and use them to find what you need online or at your local hardware store.  When you choose the garage door springs you need, you will install them carefully as the tension they carry can kick you back.  You will also need to pay attention to how the cable part is woven through the sheaves so you do it right.  Make sure no one is standing too close as you replace them.
